I won this book in a publisher's promotion I picked it based on the description of a career soldier struggling with PTSD I'm interested in PTSD It's one of my professional specialties I missed something in the description Or it wasn't there I'm not sure No it was definitely there “This collection of stories in prose and verse is written by a former Special Forces soldier and is designed to provide a brief insight into the life and mind of a professional soldier“I didn't expect poetry I particularly didn't expect evocative poetry that spans the author's lifetime of experiences from childhood to adulthood His wife suggested he write to exorcise his demons I don't think she expected poetry eitherIt's pretty amazing You don't expect bigk burly deadly soldier types to write poetry at all much less insightful self revealing poetry There are nuggets of reflection all through this book many in the introductory prose pieces to the poems others deeper and starker in the poems themselves Poems have fewer words to carry their power the impact strikes deeply and that makes them harder to read sometimes There's a statement of a young soldier that is mentioned in passing “You will get us out of here won't you Colour?” I start asking that too “You will get us out of here won't you Colour?” Out of this pain and dark and hurt and death that stands at your shoulder? The experience I have working with soldiers and civilians with PTSD doesn't compare to this but it helps me to understand it Thank you Theo for listening to your wife And for trusting your readers with your pain

Every now and then I come across a book that stands a chance of making a real difference to other people's lives This is one such book The usual fare served up by ex Special Forces soldiers entertaining as they may be tend to glorify or sensationalise their uniue craft This is different Through a sensitive blend of prose and poetry it exposes the other brutal side to the military the bit so often hidden from view; the broken minds and the devastating long term effects of PTSD Post Traumatic Stress Disorder As nations we ask our military to routinely do things that only the bravest few of us would dare to do to see things that no one should have to see and to watch their friends colleagues and innocent men women and children die in horrific circumstances Then we ask them to live with the conseuences for the rest of their lives These people deserve our wholehearted life long support It takes a brave man to acknowledge human frailty in those we see as teflon coated and to bear his soul in the interests of his struggling ex comrades I salute Theo for his way of keeping these issues in the public consciousness
