    This is an extraordinary influential book Rosabeth Moss Kanter spent years learning how the people at a major corporation went about their business She interviewed people parsed documents and conducted surveys with the aim of understanding how they saw the social reality around them and how that reality influenced their lives and aspirationsAs a result she has insight into the behavior of managers and ordinary workers men and women new employees and veterans that a superficial study would be unable to produce Her description of the roles taken and activity shown by women is especially insightful She concludes that many of the characteristics of behavior in an organization that have been identified as female stem in fact not from biology or culture but from the places that women have found themselves in the expectations they have had and the expectations placed upon them Men Kanter shows often behave the same way in similar conditions Similar analyses today seek people to blame for the absence of opportunity and the struggles that women minorities and others have to put up with in corporate life Not so Kanter She suggests ways to improve organizations to make them serve their people better but does not point fingers It has to be said that the book is dated Kanter describes a secretarial workplace that no longer exists And surely the place of the wives of executives has changed since 1977 If nothing else female managers and executives are no longer rare and that has done much to change the workplace in ways that Kanter's analysis anticipated Kanter's data might be old but people in organizations still behave in ways that Kanter recognized Anyone seeking to understand corporate life today will gain much from reading Men and Women of the Corporation

    This is the book you have to read It is from the 1970s and it still tells hell a lot about life in large organizations Often you can see a reference to this book in articles on empowerment initiatives in management And very often the authors obviously haven´t read this book at all otherwise they would not claim that empowerment as a structurally dependent phenomenon is their uniue contribution Not even the chapter Contributions to theory I simply loved the part about roles managers secretaries housewives and also the whole analysis is vivid connected to other research analytically deep combining ethnography with statistical evidence One can easily guess that this book is about as we now call it gender in workplace but it is even it is about creating working environment where everyone can thrive make contribution improve their skills etc Plus the explanation of the problem with 5 men and 1 woman in a meeting or the ueen bee phenomenon is easy to follow points to structural aspects of these dynamicsJust another proof that reading books about organizations work and management from 1960s and 1970s is fun and brings inspiration Eg The Human Side of Enterprise

    First published in 1977 Men and Women of the Corporation focuses on how the structure of organizations either facilitates or prevents individuals from obtaining success and how this arrangement fundamentally affects the self identity of employees Even in 2015 many of the Kanter’s findings are still relevant Part 3 of the book which focuses on structures and processes centers on opportunity power and numbers Arguably this is where you’ll find the most useful information in attempting to make sense of workplace dynamics and organization Kanter largely focuses on women and attempts to refute the myth that women aren’t capable of being managers or that they possess some innate flaw that makes them too delicate to take on responsibility in corporations Her main argument in the book is that when women and men are in similar situations operating under similar expectations they tend to behave in similar ways Of course one may argue that men and women are socialized from birth to develop different types of behavior but this isn’t the focus of the book Rather it helps employees understand how their workplace structures affect them at their core and also provides employers with a framework to create inviting stimulating and thriving work environments
