Nona hates being a princess so she leaves her castle and becomes a pirate a knight and eventually a wandering minstrel•First off very cool illustrations Second how wonderful that this book shows a woman entering the world and doing what she chooses and doing it really well It also shows her changing her mind and switching occupations than once The only thing I have a problem with is that it highlights the role of princess rather negatively I actually like princesses but I view them as creative problem solvers who serve others I know that isn't the type of princess this book is talking about but if my daughter was really into princesses I would not read this book to her

I will admit a dual intention when I read this book The first intention was to read a book to my son and the second was to get some practice at reading Spanish aloud I did not catch everything in the book my Spanish isn't that good but I understood enough that the illustrations could fill in the gaps of what I missed It's an interesting tale told with a wonderful illustration style

I have found it very difficult to find fun books in Spanish for my daughter She really likes rhymes and this has been one of those few books that she seems to enjoy I don't see this book as highlighting princess negatively like other readers but just that Nona doesn't like being a princess As the story progresses you can tell she is just looking for something that she loves She grows tired of every profession even if she excels at it But she doesn't give up and keeps looking and trying different things until she finally finds something that she loves

I read the Spanish version ¡ué fastidio ser princesa I think this is the original and it was translated to EnglishRhyming verse tells the story of the princess Nona who escapes a boring life of being a proper princess and tries her hand at being a pirate and a knight errant before discovering her vocation as a traveling minstrel and juggler The illustrations are highly stylized fanciful and pretty In this age of princess worship I like the idea that the character is not satisfied with just being a princess and searches for some satisfying work I recommend this book
