With the innovative printing and formatting Norman attempts to convey the feeling of perusing a scrapbook rather than reading a novel This makes sense because the protagonist Gooseball Fielder is days away from death and past communicating but certainly had a life worth remembering eg Major league pitcher B 17 turret gunner originator of new religion subject of documentary The large numerals sprinkled throughout the book keep the reader from gaining momentum and again help create the scrapbook effectThe real uestion is how the novel could have so accurately predicted the inglorious rise of Donald Trump ten years before the 2016 electoral college vote His description of the US president might have been taken from Bob Woodward's book about Trump if Woodward had of a sense of humorThe seemingly contradictory American diseases of consumerism and income ineuality are prevalent today than in 2006 when the novel was first published Conservative readers may enjoy the book if they don't make the Trump connection which could not have been intended by the author in 2006 Liberal readers will be amazed by the uncanny predictions Only time will tell whether the implementation of the 25th Amendment and a Second American Revolution will actually come to pass as they do in Norman's version of a divided America The novel does have a scrapbook feel although the print and formatting may be annoying to someone who didn't read the book cover which mentions the attempt at a scrapbook effectAll in all it is a fitting ending to the Gooseball Fielder trilogy The depressing ending to Cross Body Block which was so unexpected after the uplifting ending to Fielder's Choice is nullified by the final scrapbook entries of Bat Day Gooseball remains an unlikely hero to the end
