Racing along New York City streets one March 1945 day Linus Muller stops to catch his breath when his attention is suddenly arrested by a familiar face on a poster Noting the address on the poster Linus changes course and sets off for it insteadFlashback to September 1943 Linus is 12 years old and has just inherited his older brother's shoes and his job delivering groceries for his parent's shop In fact with six kids and a war on everything is a hand me down except for Linus's older brother Albie who is off to war now that he is old enough to enlist Linus has also inherited Albie's bed and has been made caretaker of Albie's superhero comic books collection a love they shared as well as Albie drawing of his own superhero Mr Superspeed with whom Linus keeps a running conversation while he makes his deliveries As Linus begins his life as a delivery boy he meets all the customers and uickly learns their uirky ways like Mrs DeWinter who always has another task waiting for Linus to do when he brings her groceries His job takes him all over the Upper East Side of Manhattan an area Linus knows like the back of his hand Late in the afternoon on his first day his mother hands Linus a crate of oranges and tells him to deliver them to 15 East 59th Street Little did Linus know this would be his most interesting monthly deliveryLiving there is an elderly painter with a difficult to remember name and a studio that has stark white walls except for the groups of brightly colored suares and rectangles here and there Linus started called the painter Mister Orange and it turns out that Mr Orange had recently arrived from Nazi occupied Holland to escape Hitler's oppressive control on the artsMeanwhile brother Albie is still excited to go to war and ships out to Italy as soon as basic training is over At first Albie's letters are still filled with enthusiastic descriptions about being a new recruit and the friends he has made From Italy he asks Linus to play a rather harmless practical joke on a friend's mother for her birthday and leave a card from her son at the same time Linus carries out his mission with stealth but then Albie's next letter is somber and sad as he reports his friend has fallen in battleLinus understands how it feels to lose a friend It appears that he is losing his best friend to an older boy who dislikes Linus as much as Linus dislikes him And so his visits to Mr Orange become a bright spot in his life and it is there that the two talk about life Angry at the reality of war that Albie describes Linus decides that comics and superheroes are imaginary escapes from all the horrors in life and rejects them completely Now he doesn't even have the voice of Mr Superspeed to accompany him But as Mr Orange talks to him about his painting and even teaches him how to dance the boogie woogie he also tells Linus about the importance of imagination especially during wartime If imagination were as harmless as you thinkthen the Nazis couldn't be so scared of it pg 122 All the while Mr Orange works on his latest painting a freedom he would not have had if he has remained in Europe Can Mister Orange help Linus through this difficult time?Originally written in Dutch and skillfully translated by Laura Watkinson Mister Orange is itself a wonderful historical fiction work of imagination that skillfully portrays the daily hustle and bustle of life in one New York City neighborhood during WW2 as Linus makes his deliveries I grew up in Brooklyn and Manhattan at a time when Mom and Pop grocery stores were still common my brother's first job was delivering groceries and if you had a fight with your best friend you just went over to their house to make up just the way Linus does very simple very easy So I know that this and of Mister Orange is pretty spot on And so is the Action Comic that Linus buys for Albie November 1943 No 66 Matti has done her research wellBut the friendship between Mister Orange and Linus would be unusual though maybe not impossible In a way however it is a nice example of how even a short lived friendship can impact our lives in this case from September 1943 to February 1944 Mister Orange is a nice coming of age story that unfolds slowly and steadily but should still engage young readers though probably not everyone Linus is a thoughtful introspective observant boy who really loves life at least until reality comes knocking and he finds his world terribly shaken I put Mister Orange on hold at the library based only on the cover and knowing it was a WW2 story because I loved the cover of the American edition Piet Mondrian 1872 1944 is one of my favorite abstract painters so as soon as I saw the cover I knew he would be in the story somewhere someway Jenni Desmond the illustrator of Mister Orange has really captured both the motion of the city as Linus travels around and the sense of movement that Mondrian's painting reflect so that it becomes such a wonderful mixture of Linus's life and Mondrian's painting which is as it should be I found myself going over it again and again after I finished reading the book In the back on the book is a section called Mister Mondrian This FYI section describes his life and the paintings he did while live in New York City There are some who think this book would not appeal to young readers but I think they will enjoy reading about Linus and his life and the person who helped him work things out for himselfThis book is recommended for readers age 9This book was borrowed from the Webster Branch of the NYPLThis book was originally reviewed at The Children's War

Few foreign books for children wind up translated into English perhaps not surprisingly given the plethora of titles published each year by American and English speaking authors from Canada England Australia and other countries Often the ones that do make it for release in the US are special titles and that's the case with the new historical novel Mister Orange by Dutch author Truus Matti This title is especially unusual because although written originally in Dutch and first published in the Netherlands the book takes place in New York City during World War II and the protagonist is a young American boy Linus whose brother has shipped off to fight on the European front Mr Orange as adults might guess who see the American cover the Dutch cover looks completely different as is often the case is none other than the famous Dutch artist Piet Mondrian who has moved to New York to escape the repressive political environment in Europe With Linus' older brother off at the war Linus inherits his grocery delivery route and unable to remember his customer's foreign name dubs him Mr Orange because of his twice monthly delivery of a box of oranges The two strike up an unusual friendship as Mr Orange shares with Linus his unusual perspective on life We learn for example how he attempted to capture in his work the raw energy of both boogie woogie music and New York At home Linus' family anxiously awaits word from Linus' brother Alfie and each letter is eagerly devoured At first the war seems like something out of his brother's beloved super hero comic books with his brother the hero until Linus reads part of a despairing letter that his parents tried to keep from him As the real horrors of war hit home Linus grows and changes as well Can imaginary heroes like Mister Superspeed do any good in a world filled with so much uncertainty and horrors? Perhaps Mr Orange can help Linus make sense of it all Back matter includes information on Piet Mondrian and his life in New York City in the 1940's Also included are additional resources for reading watching on the Internet and where to find Mondrian's paintings in museums around the United States This is an top notch historical novel that should appeal to boys as well as girls It's filled with characters that young people can easily identify with and also provides interdisciplinary content on World War II the home front and art It can be effectively paired with a book on Mondrian or further exploration of the artist's works on the Internet in order to fully appreciate the mental images of his apartment and working style described in the book Truss' first novel Departure Time was a 2011 Batchelder Honor Book and I won't be surprised if this book is also recognized by that committee which awards honors to the most outstanding books originally published in a language other than English and then translated and published in the US

Normally I'm not a fan of World War II historical fiction but this book was justso good and subtle and incredible  Based on a real artist Mister Orange represents a man who had to leave his country in order to find safety and importantly creativity  And the that Linus talks to Mister Orange the he realizes that the war is not just some heroic action filled event  It's horrific and terrible and his brother censors the letters that he sends home in order to save their siblings the strife of hearing just how hard it is overseas  And all the while this is happening Linus is in the midst of adolescence maturing from a lover of comic book characters and imaginary superheros to a supporter of his family business who must help the cause in any way he can  Told through Linus' perspective letters and imagination this text successfully weaves the joys of being young alongside the horrors of war  It makes for something intricate and delicate and something touching than I initially expectedGreat for readers who enjoy World War II fiction or who have experienced a family member leaving to join the armed forcesReview cross listed here

A delightful historical novel set in New York City during World War II that sensitively portrays a young boy's discovery of the power of art and family life on the American home front A Dutch translation winner of the 2014 Mildred L Batchelder Award

  5. Betsy Betsy says:

One Sentence Review Just the most charming little book and I can attest that as a New Yorker Ms Matti gets all the details of the city right you'd never known the book was a translation

  6. Kirsten Kirsten says:

I read an English translationAn extraordinary depiction of the relationship between a grocery delivery boy whose brother is in the army in 1943 with an eccentric artist clearly intended to be the artist Piet Mondrian This is a gift to children when it comes to understanding modern art and the I can do that response that most kids have to it including my own response to Mondrian when I first encountered his work as a teenager and a celebration of imagination Not a lot actually happens in the book It's essentially an account of what it's like for this boy to live day by day with his family friends and customers while his brother is away There are some compelling and terrible moments Mister Orange's description of crossing the ocean to America made me feel like I was right there on the water in complete darkness with him and the boy's discovery of his brother's changed feelings about the war when he reads a letter not meant for him but this is about character and atmosphere than about plot It's not essential reading but it was refreshing and I came out of it with a new perspective on Mondrian

  7. Cheyenne Bryant Cheyenne Bryant says:

The book Mister Orange by Truus Matti is a story that takes place during wartime in 1943 A boy from New York named Linus inherits a lot of responsibility when his older brother leaves for war Linus encounters a man who introduces him to new forms of artistic expression which ultimately helps Linus during the difficult period of missing his brother The author does an excellent job of depicting Linus' loss of innocence as he begins to realize the pain of war I would use this book in a fifth grade classroom due to some of the mature concepts introduced in this book The book would be ideal to integrate social studies content with reading content The following standards could be used in combination SS5H4 Explain America's involvement in World War 2ELAGSE5RL1 uote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text

  8. Daniel Daniel says:

Linus is a boy who lives in New York City at the start of World War 2 He lives in an apartment with 2 older brothers 3 younger siblings and his mom and dad Their family runs a delivery service business that reuires all of the family to help with the business Now that Linus’s oldest brother Albie went off to war Linus takes place of his second oldest brother Simon Linus’s new job is running the actual deliveries from house to house On his first round of deliveries Linus meets a uite particular man Read this boom to find out about Linus’s connection with the man and about the constant worry about Albie in the war This book is originally written in Dutch but can be found in English

  9. Katie Robards Katie Robards says:

Linus Muller works at a family grocery store in Manhattan He was just told that his brother was needed to fight in World Word II Linus has to pick up the extra work from his brother leaving so he takes over grocery deliveries This is where he meets a costumer by the name Mister Orange Mister Orange is an artist from Europe Linus and Mister Orange become friends and start carrying on conversations over the course of time These conversations are from talking about the war to freedom These conversations allow Linus to have an understanding of the realities of war and how it can impact many people

  10. Jenny Staller Jenny Staller says:

Meh Not bad but also not memorable This novel is short enough to read in an hour or two but I didn't end up invested in any of the characters Perhaps that had to do with the translation but overall I felt like it was too generic for me to really care what was going on By far the most interesting character was the artist Mr Orange himself but the scenes with him were brief and rather few I could see myself recommending this to readers looking for something short or those who are obsessed with WWII books and will read anything on the subject but otherwise I don't think it would be my first suggestion
