The I read Sridala Swami's poetry the I fall in love with her use of imagery and language This is her first book which is every bit as good as her recent book Escape Artist In both books there is a poem entitled Hospital Catalogues each dealing with a different moment in life and responding to the environment of the hospital first with birth than later with death Both are eually moving Many of her poems leave one strong yet subtle imagery of the environment as in Cement Lungs where the personified city exhales dust or Celebrating Rain in which the speaker gathers to curate the rain There are also wonderful poems about family such as The Shore Temple We Never Saw about a trip with her son to Mahabalipuram Regardless of her subject she paints such a vivid and often stirring picture that it sticks with you and calls you to re read her poems again and again
