I have resisted the urge to experience the 50 Shades of Grey phenomenon if I want to read porn I know a good site that does what I need it to do without having to buy an ebook ; but I did come across Cassandra Parkin's blog post 50 things that annoy me about 50 Shades of Grey and found it very entertaining In the article Parkin basically rips apart EL James' writing style proving that a this is a really badly written book b her characters are about as unrealistic as they could possibly be and c she's doing a great job of pushing feminism back 50 yearsAt the end of the blog post Parkin mentioned that she'd been commissioned to write a book along the same lines so I was really excited to discover it was available Lighter Shades of grey is indeed very entertaining some of the extracts from the original book accompanied by Parkin's dry commentary made me laugh out loud For exampleAna finally takes an interest in her personal safety I find two welcome hair ties at the same time in my bag and uickly tie my hair in pigtails Yes The girly I look perhaps the safer I’ll be from Bluebeard I take my iPod out of the bag and plug my headphones in p126 Hairstyles however well chosen are rarely a successful protection against a determined assailant If you feel threatened you may want to consider a Taser a can of Mace or using the power of physical movement to transport yourself out of the apartment before he wakes up On the other hand you could just plug your iPod in and set the volume to loud That way you won’t have to endure the unpleasantness of hearing him creeping up behind you before he slices off your head and puts it in the fridge for a little snack laterThe problem was the book was just too short The first few chapters are just a repeat of the blog post and yes there are a couple of appendices that are interesting but I read this in under an hour and felt short changed to be honest I'm sure there's a lot that could be written about the book for example Parkin actually makes virtually no mention of the sex scenes that I believe take place leaving me to wonder if actually they are uite good and that's why millions of women are able to overlook the other criticisms of the bookI still don't want to read the original if I did it would only be to take the piss out of it but I would recommend everyone to read this whether you're a fan or not Entertainment wise this would have been five stars but it loses one or one and a half really for being too short That said I sincerely hope the author gives the same treatment to the other books ion the series

While I would never recommend anyone actually buy 50 Shade of Grey read it if God forbid you feel you HAVE to read it please borrow it from a friend or the library I will say I'm now glad I did read it Seeing as how I can't UNREAD it at least it made Lighter Shades of Grey that much hilarious 50 Shades has definitely become an either you love it or you hate it kind of book so I'm not surprised that some people don't care for this one But for those of us who were mortified by the originaland there are as many who hate it as love it this was spot on I think you could write 4 of these covering different things from 50 Shades that were either ridiculous confusing or just downright insulting and never run out of material Thanks for the laugh Cassandra Parkin

  3. Kirsten Kirsten says:

Absolutely adored this book I would actually recommend reading this book to people rather than Fifty Shades of Grey which was all right but doesn't deserve the hoopla surrounding itThis book is funny well thought out and brilliantly written You don't need to have read Fifty Shades of Grey to understand itRead this book and I guarantee you won't be disappointed

This is far better than the book it is analysing It mirrors how I felt while reading it precisely Except y'know funnier

So far it's not really that good I realize that the book is meant to pick apart Fifty Shades of Grey chapter by chapter but seriously how many times can the author call Christian Grey stupid and that's all within chapter 1? It might be a struggle to get all the way through this book Good thing it's a borrowed book from the library and not one that I paid money forUpdate once finished readingWell I made it through and it did finally get better but I'm still glad it was a borrowed book It was actually a pretty comical book overall The author clearly can't stand Christian and thinks Ana is dumb as a box of rocks because she points out the obvious goofy things that you might not have really noticed while reading Fifty Shades because you were too caught up in it Her opinions are pretty harsh but at least she puts a funny spin on them

I loved this book I managed to read only the first book of the original series of Fifty Shades and couldn't bring myself to suffer the other two Like Ms Parkin I saw immediately what a numpty Ana was and in fact so old fashioned she could have been from the 1950's I also recognised the bullying controlling nature of Grey Ms Parkin has written a fantastic critiue; at times thought provoking and at other times with wonderful humourMy experience is that ardent fans of Fifty Shades seem blind to the abuse perpetuated in the novel and make excuses why certain events happened; they actually excuse Grey for his appalling behaviour I believe that fans as well as non fans of Fifty Shades should read this book A well deserved four stars

  7. Ashley Ball Ashley Ball says:

This review had its amusing parts and definitely made me aware of just how badly written the Fifty Shades books are Parts of it were overly critical and just plain incorrect though such as when she points out that Ana's math is not up to par when she asks Christian if she is his 17th sexual partner He had 15 submissives and one Mrs Robinson After Ana that does make 17 I can't believe I'd ever care about the number of sex partners had by a fictional character but Cassandra was incorrect and that bothers me

I didn't get past the first ten pages so perhaps this gets interesting but all that was just play by play snark and not nearly as funny or insightful as Jennifer Armintrout's And this sort of thing plays much better in a blog than in a book pretending to be actual literary criticism

  9. Cathy Cathy says:

amusing facts about 50 Shades of Grey from Lighter Shades of GreyNumber of times Ana uses the phrase “Oh my” 49 Or put it another way every 104 pagesNumber of times Ana rolls her eyes 14Number of times Ana or Christian bites Ana’s lip 43Number of times Christian’s hair is mentioned43Number of times Ana blushes127Number of times Ana engages in dialogue with Inner Goddess53Her Subconscious77

  10. Michelle Michelle says:

Definitely one for people who have read Fifty Shades of Grey and feel it is terribly flawed as a piece of literature There are a lot of laugh out loud moments though I am kind of disappointed that a lot of things that genuinely irked me about the book were not mentioned But I guess it would have become an encyclopedia if everything made the cut
