355Mon avis en FrançaisMy English reviewI’m not often disappointed by the novels of the publisher and when I saw the release of this new series I was immediately intriguedSince the death of her husband in her former kingdom Brenna Shadow Bearer is now exiled in the earthly world Yes because she has messed up with the designs of her father when the young woman rebelled to avenge the man she loved Today she is forced to stay on earth to redeem herself away from her family but with a whole new family of friends present for her These friends are also very different so we have vampires ghosts and others But when these people are in danger and are even murdered Brenna is obliged to take part of that Oh yes and she is determined to understand what is happening and to manage this problem Yet if it were not just that because a new Shadow Bearer is in town and she is assigned to this new partner But is this charming and mysterious man here on the orders of her father to kill her? To spy on her? Why is he so interested in her past and about what happened to her deceased husband? We fairly understand all that was happening over Brenna and Gray but I found it surprising that the young woman does not think of it even for a second By cons I was really heartbroken for the young woman Gray charms her constantly but also reminds her all the time about what she has lost to make her feel guilty and I admit that I found it a little too much in the end It’s uite sad to see our heroine suffer so much and see Gray playing with her to discover what really happened in the past In terms of history it remains basic and common enough for an urban fantasy novel but the author’s style is uite interesting and addictive and I spent a good time with the wholeIt’s a nice story found here despite a little lack of originality We discover with pleasure the characters and we follow them throughout their adventures I am curious to see if we have a seuel and what will happen exactly to our protagonists after all the events

To read this review and others like it check out my site wwwhomelovebookscomSo the biggest problem I had when it came time to review this book was trying to decide if I liked it or I loved it which is always a good sign This was easily one of those books that I want to sit in one place for a few hours have no one disturb me and just submerge myself into the world and the characters and escape for a while I genuinely enjoyed the book from beginning to endA couple of things stood out to me as I read the book The first thing was at the very beginning it starts with Brenna's point of view and then she meets Gray I knew I was going to like Gray not sure how I knew but I knew I would As the writing progressed I remember thinking in my head I really hope Angela includes Gray's point of view too it would make the book so much better Three pages later bam there was Gray's point of view I think the story could have been told in only one POV but having both just made it so much better gave everyone so much depth and well made me happyBrenna as a character just works for me She's got a tough exterior but on the inside she's a bit on the tortured side She's strong but loyal She has a great moral compass There were several times throughout the book where she could have taken the easy route of self gratification and just gone for the easy vengeance but instead she does the right thing the right thing for her the right thing for justice I wish I could explain but I am so not going to ruin it for future readers Brenna has a serious job basically policing the world from things that go bump in the night there's some great backstory here about the Fall and the Rise But the thing about her job is that really it's all she has left The people she works with are the only people she has left really So when something starts really threatening the people she cares for Brenna has no choice but to put herself out in front of everyone to do her best to protect themAs for Gray well I like him too Again not sure what it was that won me over but I like him He shows up as kind of a mystery for Brenna and he seems to be out for revenge except he's playing the long game definitely not in it for instant gratification Only as the story goes on and you learn and about him the he realizes he doesn't know as much as he thought Like Breena he is loyal to those he cares about is a tough guy but what I really like about him is he doesn't try to be in charge of Brenna and than that when she uses her magic for something he can't do he is literally in awe of her He respects her for who she is and I like that I hate when a man just overpowers a woman so their dynamic really worked for meI like the backstory I like how the Veil has been torn and now people from different worlds are all in one place together causing problems and learning to co exist The big bad in this book wasn't too surprising but was written well I liked that the fight scenes or actions scenes were easy to follow I really liked the true mix of people and races of people that were in this book I hope in the next book we get to see of Brenna and Gray's home world and perhaps learn about their respective histories and families But as a first book in a series I can honestly say this is one I enjoyed without a doubtIn the end I am going to give this book a Loved It review because it really was such a good read I think I could easily recommend this book to anyone who likes urban fantasy and the is even a little something in their for the folks that like paranormal romance as well Can't wait to read the next book although I have a feeling I will have to wait until next year

5sLoved itReview posted herehttpbookpassionforlifeblogspotcoLoved loved loved this book It had everything I could wish for in an Urban Fantasy novel and it hit the spot time and time againTo start we get a kickass female lead with a bad history and a lot of power – nice combo We meet Brenna Baudouin a Shadow Bearer that has been banished from her home world after she wiped out an army of men following her husbands’ death at the hands of the very people she should have been able to trust with her life Not only dealing with that betrayal she is used as a scapegoat and made to pay penance in the form of policing supernatural criminals on Earth for 100 years She has lost everything and has nothing left to lose even 90 years down the lineEnter love interest –Gray Warlow who Brenna is forced to take on as a partner Gray is another Shadow Bearer and immediately gets Brenna’s back up because there is no reason for him to be there unless a he was banished himself or b he was sent to kill Brenna on behalf of the people who believe she is a traitor and with her penance nearly up she believes it’s the latter Gray is keeping secrets Brenna knows this he wears an impenetrable glamour that she can’t get around and that does not instil trust between themThey form a tentative alliance however when a serial killer starts striking a little too close to home for Brenna and her friends start turning up dead With the mystery of Grey his powers his agenda and the fact that he’s the first man Brenna has been attracted to since her husband and the strange happenings surrounding the uest for the killer Brenna has than enough on her hands to keep her busyAs I said I loved this book it was so good I easily connected to the characters and Brenna was so admirable here we have a woman who has a horrific history and is still paying the cost of putting her faith in the wrong people she still mourns her husband but carries on doing her penance Her powers are awesome they show just how capable she is and she is than capable of doing her job so isn’t very happy when a ‘partner’ is forced upon her Gray was a great character too I liked what he brought to the story he was a good love interest and I liked how he challenged Brenna in both work and emotionally He has a secret and it is awesome That’s all I’m saying but I greatly enjoyed reading how that played out throughout the book and couldn’t wait for the reveal and it ties in well with the story so wellThe actual story was great and a lot of it has to do with Brenna’s previous life and it coming back to haunt her Someone is using demons to possess humans and they notice it’s not just the humans at risk forcing many of the supernaturals to band together to protect their own I love these set ups where the main character takes the lead in an investigation and we watch her hunt down the perpetrator using clues forcing information – any means necessary really and when it has a supernatural element I’m always interested There was tons of action as they fight off anything that is thrown at them and a liberal amount of magic being flung around too giving us a good idea of what the supernatural are capable of It was such an easy consuming read that I could not put down with perfect pacing for me too and I was engrossed from beginning to end It was an awesome start to the series and I’ll definitely be reading

Not bad Fairly interesting concept and characters Would have appreciated info regarding the setting All the background info was somewhat vague It's clear that there was a war and the war caused all sorts of damage to earth and the veil which separates earth from other planes thus allowing Others supernatural beings to get through Logically there had to have been several different planes simply because of the variety types of supernatural beings mentioned but the only one specified was the one from which the two main characters originated The majority of the book takes place in the US in what is left of Denver CO Humans and supernaturals coexist but only just After the war ravaged the landscape people were forced to live underground in abandoned sewer tunnels Every description I read regarding the way everyone lives at the present left me feeling like I didn't know enough and I still had uestions Just how long exactly has it been since the war? If everyone lives in the sewers did new sewers get built? How is it that a new sewer system could be established but the majority of the people are living in run down hovels which seem to be all that remain standing after the war Why wouldn't someone have rebuilt at this point? EtcThought the background story regarding Brenna and the events surrounding her husband's death back on her home world sounded interesting than the actual mystery being investigated at the present time I would have liked to read about that I thought the housemates were entertaining and interesting however when Brenna's new partner was introduced to the house there was this whole you can stay here permanently if you can last through the night situation going on I was looking forward to being entertained by whatever attacks and tests of skill might be introduced but was completely underwhelmed with what actually happened Seriously the hazing for lack of a better term was so weak it really didn't even warrant a warning

  5. Dark Faerie Tales Dark Faerie Tales says:

Review courtesy of Dark Faerie Talesuick Dirty Overall Shadows of Fate has all the elements of a great read Dennis definitely shows promise and her Shadow Born series could become a strong new series for other readers of Urban FantasyOpening Sentence Rotting wood crunched under Brenna’s weight as she stepped into the shadows beside the deserted storefrontThe ReviewAn indeterminate amount of time has passed since The Fall the human war that forced survivors underground and ripped opened the Veil between worlds Vampires demons and other countless creatures flooded the Earthly plane fighting to control the last disjointed pockets of life and literally placing humankind at the bottom of the food chain Now only the Interspecies Relations Taskforce IRT stands between these factions and the extinction of humankindBanished from her own homeworld and forced through the Veil Brenna Baudouin’s Shadow Bearer magic is one the most powerful weapons the IRT has in the fight to maintain order She’s smart beautiful and utterly deadly She’s also been the only one of her kind on Earth for close to a century So it’s understandable that she’d have some conflicting emotions after walking into her office and finding Gray Warlow at her desk Though she suspects Gray has been sent to Denver to kill her on her father’s orders she can’t help being drawn to the attractive male Shadow Bearer with strangely familiar eyes and dangerous secrets Things between the two of them become even complicated when Brenna is linked to a string of gruesome murders As their investigation uncovers the truth behind the plot to frame Brenna they discover that they have no choice but to combine their powers to stop a killer from her pastNormally I have a pretty good sense of how I’m going to rate a book as soon as I get to the blank page or screen at the end Not so with Shadows of Fate the first book in the Shadow Born series I’ve flip flopped between 3 and 4 Skulls for a couple of days trying to decide how to write the review when I have such a torn responseDennis created an interesting post apocalyptic world and I especially enjoyed her mythology The idea that paranormal creatures aren’t from Earth that they live in parallel dimensions distinct from each other is one of the most uniue explanations I’ve read for their origins This concept provided an explanation for why things were happening and demonstrated the need for the IRTIt’s difficult for even the most experience writer to create an in depth urban fantasy without overwhelming the reader though Dennis walked a thin line between giving too much information and keeping me interested There were definitely times when I felt like Shadows of Fate veered into a science fiction story There were also times when things just didn’t add up Why didn’t the Guardians immensely powerful beings with the ability to prevent anyone from traveling through the Veil stop the influx of creatures into the Earthly realm in the beginning? If Brenna could banish demons back to their own realms why couldn’t she do the same with other creatures fighting for power? If vampires and the like are from another plane of existence where do human ghosts come from?Probably the biggest issue though was the relationship between Brenna and Gray Whether done intentionally or not Brenna weakened as the story progressed It almost felt like she immediately fell into the “damsel in distress” role as soon as Gray arrived She had every right to demand the murderer be dealt with on Earth especially considering her past Yet she barely showed any anger or doubt when Gray basically bullied her into doings things his way Her seemingly easy acceptance of Gray’s secret was another big sticking point for me Dennis created an excellent sense of anticipation for the Big Reveal building the sexual tension and emotional struggles between Brenna and Gray until that moment Yet the story fell flat right when it should’ve exploded and the conclusion left me feeling slightly cheatedThere were several things I truly enjoyed about the story Dennis’ world building was original and her explanation of the existence of paranormal creatures was uniue Unfortunately there were also a lot of things I didn’t like The lower rating is ultimately due to the fact that the characters and story seemed to run out of steam long before the weak ending I have a mild interest in the unanswered uestions this story raised but probably won’t continue with the seriesNotable Scene“Gray” He took her hand It was too cold making him wonder how long it had been since she had fed “Are you going to try to kill me again or are we good?”Mira shrugged “Can’t make any promises about tomorrow but I’m not an idiot I’m no match for you Sam may be but you’re strong enough for our purposes”“And those are?”“Protection You never know when a demon is going to attack especially lately We have only one another and we have no use for anyone who is not powerful enough to keep up” Sam settled into a wide legged stance next to Mira “The war may be over for the humans but it’s not for us”“I know” Gray took a deep breath “I just moved here but I thought this was a safe haven”Mira snorted “If you want safety move east You won’t find it here”FTC Advisory Samhain Publishing provided me with a copy of Shadows of Fate No goody bags sponsorships “material connections” or bribes were exchanged for my review

Posted at Yummy Men Kick Ass Chicks Shadows of Fate is the first book in the new Shadow Born series by Angela Dennis In the world created for this book humans are aware of paranormal creatures They are also the minority Nobody wants the humans to become extinct so a special ‘peace keeping’ unit was created and everyone tries to live in a semblance of peace I have not read many books where the paranormal creatures outnumber the humans so for me that was a neat little twist What was also very uniue was that paranormal creatures come from parallel dimensions and have crossed to Earth during The Fall a war where the Veil was compromisedNot that we learn or read much about the humans in this world This book definitely focuses on the supernaturals Brenna is a Shadow Bearer She has magic and huntsfights demons for the IRT the ‘police’ She starts off coming across as uite the badass with a huge heart yet we learn uickly enough that she also has a very vulnerable spirit She has not had an easy life She was banished to the earthly plane as punishment for something she had no control over doing almost one hundred years ago But she is strong and has carved out a life for herself here She is the type of character you want to see do well and strive I enjoyed reading her uite a bit even though I found her character swayed from strong to unsure a little too easily at timesGray is another Shadow Bearer and has pretty much come out of nowhere Brenna thought she was the only Shadow Bearer on Earth for almost a century but then nope up comes Gray I did have a bit of trouble connecting with him in the beginning as his character was sort of thrown into the story He suddenly starts almost bossing Brenna around and what surprised me is she mostly lets him They have a history yet I didn’t uite feel this As I mentioned I like Brenna and I did grow to like Gray but I didn’t uite feel Brenna and Gray together The chemistry was a little short for meWho the ultimate bad guy is sort of surprised me but not really at the same time and the story leading up to his reveal was solid People close to Brenna are dying and she needs to figure out why and who is responsible This book is a bit on the darker side so many people die uite horribly But the why behind it all is interesting to discover This book was definitely filled with twists None of which particularly surprised me but again fun to readBeing the first in a new urban fantasy series means there are a lot of details shared with readers in order to set up the characters and the world I have to admit that sometimes it was a bit much and other times it’s like there wasn’t enough information Some things didn’t uite fit while others found me thinking ‘okay we know already’ I feel all of this was because this is a book one and that things will balance out in the next installment Fading Light due to release September 23rd 2014There were many interesting side characters that really added to Brenna’s character development and to the story as a whole Sam Mira Seraph and Heidi all intrigued me and kept me readingOverall I found Shadows of Fate to be a decent beginning to a new urban fantasy series The bones are solid I feel if the author builds the main characters makes them solid and smooths out some details here and there this series holds the potential to be great35 stars

3 IS THAT JESSICA BIEL ON THE COVER? STARS After the death of her husband and being brand a traitor by her father Brenna is banished from her world and forced to live out her century long penance in another plane With the guilt and confusion from that fateful night that changed her life forever always riding on the coat tails of her conscious Brenna embraces the role of a Hunter banishing demons back to hell as her new way of life When grizzly murders seemingly impossible demonic activity and an eerily familiar new partner shake up Brenna’s new life she learns the hard way that no one is who they seem and century long grudges not easily forgotten Sometimes I think that reading a new paranormal romancefantasy series is like eating a cake When making a cake there are key ingredients such as flour eggs and oil that you will see in every recipe but it’s what else you decide to add or subtract from the mix that can change it from just a simple treat to either a mouthwatering decadent dessert or an inedible bubbly pile of goo I found Shadows of Fate Shadow Born to be a far cry from being an inedible pile of goo but it most definitely was not a decadent dessert for me and my taste buds left unsatisfied I found this book really hard to get into and I was very unengaged through a majority of it It did start to pick up the pace about ¾ of the way in and I found my interest growing but the interest came a little too late for me but it did save it from becoming a two star read turning it into a three Now I’ll never claim to be the sharpest knife in the block but I’m not a mere butter knife either so I was really bothered that after reading this book I found myself a little confused I never really got a clear understanding of the back story or worlds that Ms Dennis created and wanted me immersed A part of this could be my lack of engagement in the book but I did not understand some of the editing choices On the flip side of that coin I can say that the Ms Dennis did a good job with her character development I walked away from this with a very concise image of most the characters that I was introduced to and their emotionsOverall this book did not just jump out and grab me but the ending did do a lot to save it in my estimation and has me intrigued as to where Ms Dennis is taking this series It does suffer a little from the “First Book” Syndrome as all first in a series do so keep that in mind if you decide to read this one I think that some veteran paranormal romancefantasy genre readers might find this a bit lackluster but it really all depends on personal tastes as well Some of my favorites in this genre for comparison purposes are Anita Blake the first part of the series Kate Daniels Dark Hunter Charley Davidson and the Night Huntress series Happy Reading until next timeI would like to thank NetGalley and Samhain Publishing for the ARC of this title in exchange for an honest review

Well hot damn I found a great new Urban Fantasy series to love It grabbed me from the beginning AND it kept me there because there are so many mysteries that unravel so perfectly There are so many good things to say about this series It starts with a girl who has some special powers and she’s living on Earth or what’s left of it after a little incident that started an apocalypse Well she was forced on Earth LOL And yet she makes the most of it She has a very enlightening outlook on life and I can’t wait for her story to continue to bloom in hopefully a lot books to come Brenna is our main character You’re going to learn her past and why she’s been in exile on Earth for a while She’s also bad ass and is not scared of anything She’s also fiercely protective of those she holds close to her which will surprise you She’s so tough and yet when you learn her past you’ll want to hug her and hold her and make her feel better And she’s also surprisingly compassionateGray is something of a damn mystery almost the whole freaking book Maybe a HAWT mystery but you can’t help but love the mysterious bad boy who’s a little broken who thinks he knows something has coldness in his heart with ill intent and then the girl blows his mind gives him the truth and warms that heart of his I loved when Gray’s little mystery fell apart and he figured out who and what Brenna really was I was like HA Served you right for thinking And then I was like ok what the hell are you gunna do to fix your craptastic mess up now And damnit if he didn’t completely win me over in the end when it really counted even the Elder made the perfect statement when he told Gray he made the right choice OOOOH and my favorite part he’s alpha BUT not dominant which is a dog thing BUT by that I mean he may be all protective but he is also not going to stop her from being who she is Trust me you’ll fall for him too I loved the writing style I loved the POVs than one and how they sounded I really loved the secondary characters and Brenna’s friends of mixes and matches This whole story is just fantastic The world building is absolutely amazing It’s told in a way that is so believable to think about it it could happen so it made this one feel real And the way things all add up but you didn’t figure it out in the beginning or I didn’t it great It makes for a wonderful ride I absolutely cannot wait for MORE GIMME GIMME PLEASE I definitely recommend this one because it’s just that good 5 DRASTICALLY GREAT PAWS

A really good book Brenna is a Shadow Bearer she has been banished from her world and now she lives on earth I like Brenna she’s a brave woman with an awful father who treats her like a pawn and ask for her banishment She’s strong and work with Seraph to eradicate all the demons on earth Unfortunately Gray is also a Shadow Bearer and he’s her new partner Gray has a secret Brenna betrayed his friends and he wants to take revenge But the he’s with her the he rediscovers her and understand that we lied to himI like the fact that our world knew about the supernatural beings because of experimental warheads which have rendered the surface world unlivable for decades and worn away the Veil separating the planes It’s original and I like that Brenna and Gray are strong together but the fact that Gray kept some secret is annoying for Brenna The dialogs between them are sometimes hilarious and often hot and unpredictable Brenna is a real hero she doesn’t think twice before acting and she protects her friends and the people she loves She’s my Hero because I find her brave 99 years ago she was banished from her home and sent only on earth in a world where she knew nobody But nevertheless she managed to made friends and even if she did not forget her husband or her blood relatives I find that it makes her force Sometimes she puts a little of time to understand things but it is also what makes her charm and what makes the history Gray is a particularly attractive man with his secrets It is not a bad man and we understand why he bears Brenna a grudge I like his authoritarian side defender and touching The we advance in the book and the he regrets lying to her I think that Brenna and Gray are a beautiful couple who made miracles even if it takes time I like Seraph Sam Hilda and Mira I think these characters are important in Brenna’s life and future The style of the author is simple and pleasant we are embarked at once on the history And the idea of the book is great I spent a wonderful moment with this book and I don’t absolutely regret having read it Thanks Angela and Samhain publishing for giving me this opportunity And Fading light will be read soon I think I like Samhain publishing I knew only Sierra Dean and her Secret Mcueen series but the I discover this publishing house the I likereview to come soon

After being accused of her husband's murder Brenna Baudouin is banished to Earth for a hundred years This plane is struggling under an influx of demons and Brenna makes her living as a state sanctioned demon hunter Being the only Shadow Bearer on this plane has its challenges but Brenna has made friends and moved on with her life Until Grey Warlow another Shadow Bearer arrives on the scene Brenna is less than happy about her new partner but they must work together to solve a series of murders and prevent demons overrunning EarthThis book didn't start off on the right foot for me There were a couple of worldbuilding infodumps and the description was a bit overwrought at the beginning Once it settled down it was good fun The action seuences were well handled and nicely paced serving to draw me deeper into the story and providing some cinematic momentsBrenna was cast from a fairly typical Strong Female Character mould showing herself to be a badass early on in her early fights with the demons and curt when Grey arrives on the scene It was fun but edging toward irritating before her family of choice were introduced allowing us to see what she's like with people she really cares about This also made a nice contrast to her relationship with her family by blood the people responsible for her husband's death and her subseuent banishmentBrenna's position as a Strong Female Character gets progressively weakened as the story continues As Grey becomes domineering Brenna slips into passivity and a empathic healing focused role I was glad to see her redeem herself somewhat towards the endIn the second half of the book the pacing became somewhat uneven Brenna and Grey's relationship stagnates while big plot events get jammed in without the space to do them justice The family of choice thread is rather disappointingly subsumed by everything else that's going onHowever overall I found it a light and entertaining read There were some interesting worldbuilding elements a Fall without angels was a refreshing take and the characters were generally fairly likeable I was particularly intrigued by Lucy the gargoyle receptionist I'll be keeping an eye out for the next in the series
