“Fantasy would go like this—the hero overcomes the monster about beating incredible odds he woos the girl they fall in love and they live happily ever after Real life is never that way Real life is confusing And messy And painful And too many good people get serious crap dumped on them” I actually haven’t read anything by Darby Karchut and now I’m wondering why  I fell in love with The Stag Lord immediately and its intense and rich writing totally hooked me Darby is on my author to stalk list I am sure that I will be reading her other books soon and I will not be surprised if I’ll devour it for 1 day like what I did in The Stag LordBannerman and his son Cormac or Cor is on the run First of all let’s mention it already that this two are not ordinary human They are part of the tribe Tuatha De Danaan Tuatha De Danaan are warriors They fight with other creatures that human don’t know about like Feys and goblins But right now Bannermans main enemy is Cernnunos And Cernunnos wants something from him that he will never give Good thing he met Shay and her clan and they fought with him against the shapeshifter CernunnosOkay that’s all I can give Darby Kaye’s characters are phenomenal They’re very real and authentic Bannerman Boru is the reason some book nerds are not interested in guys any This guy can make you hot all over but he can also make your heart melt His son Cor is no different He is a kid and he’s character is written well The father and son relationship s to die for There were scenes that really sueezed my heartShay is one awesome heroine Now this heroine is what I am dying to read Funny badass and kind hearted “Shay Doyle” he declared “You are in danger” “No I’m in the kitchen” She raised a hand forestalling him Did I mention she’s funny? The chemistry between Bannerman and Shay is just But an Urban Fantasy book won’t be complete without its magical and entrancing myths and secrets right? Well The Stag Lord didn’t fail to deliver The world surrounding the Tuatha De Danaan and their culture and ways really captivated me I want to know And although I can already feel the torture of waiting I WILL BE PATIENT For Cernunno’s next move For what’s going to happen to Shay and Bann And for knowing the secret that is surrounding CorThe Stag Lord is a success Urban Fantasy novel It’s fast paced it’s writing is impressive and the characterization is exuisite This is 2014 favorite for me It’s a MUST READ and I recommend it to any UF lovers You don’t want to miss the heart stopping first book in this seriesyou can also read my review here

Reviewed by Rabid ReadsWhen I found out that Darby Kaye Karchut was making the jump from Young Adult to Urban Fantasy I was beyond fired up because I loved the father son bond that was at the center of her GRIFFIN series and couldn’t wait to see her work her magic on this genre The relationship between Bann Cor was indeed wonderful then the author took her strong character dynamics a step further by tacking on a love interest and strong family ties with Shay the Doyle clan Fae story lines aren’t exactly scarce in paranormal and yet Kaye still managed to inject originality into their mythology while also spinning a delightful tale filled with action mystery and romanceChildren are usually a liability in UF and have a habit of messing with a novel’s pacing because the protagonist constantly has to bail them out of trouble That so wasn’t the case here; yes Cor made a few bad calls but as a whole he was an asset to THE STAG LORD’s plot plus he helped make being a father look damn sexy The interactions between the two Boru males were the high points of this story; I liked how conflicted Bann was at times with balancing being a dad and his own happiness vis à vis his growing feelings for Shay The spunk that the eight year old brought to the dialogue and his relationship with Max the dog were stunningly lifelikeI was happy that Kaye took her time with the romantic aspects of this book; Bann Shay’s connection flourished gradually over the course of three weeks and progressed from friendship to bed buddies to coupledom at a believable rate given their attraction I loved how Doyle understood that Boru’s kid would always be #1 in his life and that she knew when to push and when to take a step back My panties were on fire for this series’ tortured hero with his swoon worthy Irish brogue and beautiful heart and bod Shay was no shrinking violet either; I adored her uiet strength steadfastness and that her bravery eualed Bann’sThe lore surrounding the Tuatha De Danaan and the origins of Cernunnos’ vendetta against the Boru family made for some compelling world building and I enjoyed all of the various monsters that came along with them There were also a couple of impressive plot twists although that last one was somewhat upsetting I did however find that this novel dawdled a bit towards the end; Bann Cor’s about face didn’t really add anything to the story other than extra pages and the set up for the next installment was overly blatant I am curious though as to why Cernunnos deviated slightly from his kill Boru agenda Book 2 awaitsTHE STAG LORD was a fine kick off to the BANNERMAN BORU series and a superb Urban Fantasy debut by author Darby Kaye

Have you ever known a family that loved one another so much they’d do almost anything for the others even to the point of death? Have you ever read a book with characters that made you want to be a member of their family because you knew no matter what was happening in your life they had your back no matter the cost? If you’d like to meet a family like the above then Award Winning Author Darby Kaye’s debut novel for adults THE STAG LORD is exactly what you need Ms Kaye who also writes MG and YA novels under the name of Darby Karchut has entered a new world with her writing in a big way with a novel that will touch your heart and leave you wanting Bannerman Boru AKA Bann and his eight year old son Cor want to get away from the horror of his wife’s death and the betrayal of his people Fate seems to have other plans for Bann when he meets Shay Doyle a healer and Fey Bann is also Fey and they are soon in a battle to save Cor’s lifeOne of the things I really like about THE STAG LORD is the family ties Shay has a slew of cousins and relatives that all pull together to help the boy and man they’ve just met The author adds a romance between Shay and Bann that helps to gentle the violence in the story Max the dog who plays an important role is one of my favorite characters What I love most in this novel is the father son relationship between Bann and Cor He’s not a perfect father He makes mistakes and admits he does but his son is Bann’s top priorityI cried I laughed I held my breath Darby Kaye did a beautiful job with descriptions of the monsters the land and also the grisly scenes The seuel is due out in December 2015 What? We have to wait a whole year? ###

THE STAG LORD was SO long GOOD but SO long Therefore if you're looking for a uick read this book is not for you The world building is super thorough and I really enjoyed getting to know all the characters involved I am thinking that future books might feel a little shorter now that we have all the back story out of the way and character development started The father son bond between Bann and Cor was strong and I could feel the love through the pages The slow romance between Shay and Bann was well done and they have a strong start to their future I enjoyed the author's take on the Tuatha De Danaan There is a lot involved but I was never bored I enjoyed my introduction to the author and look forward to where she takes her characters next This book was provided free of charge from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

ARC sent to me by PublisherDarby Kaye continues her exploration of the fighting Irish in this crisp and feisty urban fantasy Adult fans of Finn Finnegan and Gideon's Spear will relish the added frisson of a very grown up relationship between an heir to the Celtic throne and the young healer Shay whose skills are constantly put to the testSet in the unearthly landscape of Colorado's Garden of the Gods dotted with fantastical hoodoo stones it's easy to believe that another race could wage war under the noses of the sparse population One gets the feeling that Ms Kaye is very much on home territory here The Celtic angle is handled well helped by the fact that the male protagonist is a displaced Irishman with the charm and brogue that comes from a direct link with the old country not fueled by second and third generation mawkishness But it is the conflict between Bannerman Boru's paternal directive to keep his young son safe from harm and his own desires and stubborn but understandable convictions that drives the novel Eight year old Cor with all his childish foibles demands and frailties lies at the heart of the story In the end it is his well being that provides the emotional tune the cast must all dance toThere is little interaction between the Tuath Dé Danann Tribe of the Gods and mortal men here The enemy in the shape of the Fir Bolg however are all too recognisable as having very despicable human traits They would pass muster as feral youth anywhere The mythology is well established and the Stag Lord as nemesis is steeped in legendThe style is sharp and concise making it a smooth and easy read I raced through this and there were genuinely touching moments Moments which owe a lot to the author's skill The themes explored—honour belonging gender roles and paternal love—are a thousand miles away from the angst ridden paranormal romances which seem to weigh down so many urban fantasy shelves For that alone I applaud Darby Kaye I would have liked to know a little about the Stag Lord's psychopathic motivation and the gung ho tribal blood lust of the Tuath Dé Danann sometimes grated But then they aren't men they are immortal warriors And I have a sneaking feeling that Cernunnos the Stag Lord might be back to tell us all why he wants to do the things he doesMaking the transition from middle grade to adult using the same mythology can be difficult and a clever trick if you can pull it off Clever trick Ms KayeDCF

I have to admit I had a bad case of judging a book by its cover when I selected this from Netgalley It's a cliche but it's actually often a good indicator you can generally tell how much effortmoney has been put into a book by its cover and in my experience I've found that for the most part if it looks cheap it reads cheap However Sometimes I am proved wrong The Stag Lord doesn't have a great cover but what's inside is something else I've not come across Kaye's books before but its clear that she is an experienced and talented author Her characters come to life instantly the mythology she uses is intriguing and believable her dialogue is both sassy and touching I picked up this book because of the Celtic myth basis and I wasn't disappointed Kaye's use of the god Cernunnos and the Tuatha De Danaan is inspired and I really enjoyed that aspect of the story And that's not all I enjoyed her main characters Bann his son Cor and the healer Shay are all really wonderful and the way they interact the relationships that build between them was a joy to read Add in a bunch of excitement and danger and you've got yourself an unputdownable book I'm so glad I picked this one up and I can't wait to read from Kaye

Meh This fell a little flat for me I liked the characters enough especially Shay who a very feisty heroine Bann was uite annoying at times with his constant rules and reminders about behaviour I actually felt really sorry for CorI would have also liked to have seen romance between the two leads

Clearly the author knows how to write a good story and draw a picture of a close knit family group This was a fun read I finished it on two flights in a single day although it did steal from Kevin Hearne's Iron Druid series just a little even going so far as to take a sly jab at Oberon I will certainly read the follow up just to see where she takes the story
