Well I liked the bare bones of the story and the characters in a general way but really the story just felt like it rushed from one plot point to the next with out ever really fleshing anything outHowever I did enjoy reading about the gritty world building dystopian cities and the strange magic system Andzeppelins So in this story we have our lead h Katya who starts the book out running for her life because she was caught stealing from a lone shark Looking for protection she turns to the Big Boss running the city of Lavorgna named Ravic However in order to get a spot in his crew he wants her to go undercover and spy on their neighbor and fellow mob boss Lorin Using her special skills her brains and with a little help from Ravic's his right hand man Death's Head Jack Katya might just discover about her world than she ever thought she wouldSpoiler reviewview spoiler I really didn't get the romanceif you could even call it that I mean Katya and Ravic what? It seemed like she and Jack had something going on or at least building to it but then boom she's all in her feelings over Ravic? Also why was Katya all of a sudden the only one that could get detailed information from Lorin? They had the Brotherhood and Jack keeping tabs and Jack was in league with Sonya to get info so why exactly did they send Katya in wo telling her she was going to be a Doll and probably wind up dead? Did Ravic just send her not really thinking she'd get info only for it to turn out she uncovered a plot to resurrect a god?Did no one ever see the Zeppelin taking off and going down into the Sink did the Returners come out everytime he went down there? Did Ravic never just send anyone to go follow him and check out where he was going? Did I miss something here? Also the Guild of Alchemists Sonya the Mob the Returners the Dolls Dr Reynalt the Brotherhood the Haunts Os’ulythit was just a lot and we didn't spend enough time with nor develop any of these characters fully to really care about any of them hide spoiler

Good Story but Half a BookNightmare City is well written It captures interest almost immediately with Katya our young thief on the run from her victim who intends to kill her From there she goes from the frying pan to the fire as she gets mixed up in a world of mob bosses who are much than what they appear to be While the story has a strong heroine everyone else seems entirely self serving insane or a zombie until the final few pages The mob bosses were larger than life one that reminded me of an ancient warrior while the other was clearly a megalomaniac with the Herbert fetish for reanimation I must take issue with the labels post steampunk and Lovecraft adventure in regards to this story while the labels surely help in searching I have seen little evidence other than some tentacles and unexplained mechanisms that either title applies Part two may hold the key so I will withhold my final decision until thenMy biggest issue and why the story got three stars instead of four is that the book just stopped as one story arc was winding down and another was in full swing just stopped No text nothing there just the authors information I find and authors doing this and along with those who create a trilogy out of a single book I just wish the trend was away from this not toward itOther than the ending the story was really uite good I enjoyed it I will see what happens in part two

Mostly steampunk adventure but with little bits of Cthulhu inspired horror tossed into the mix A fun read moving at a breakneck pace by the end On the downside I was hoping for a bit of the eldritch horror but I'm guessing that will come in later volumes in the seriesSomething a bit odd with the page count Goodreads has it as 290 pages but the copy I got from Google Play which lists it as 250 pages only has around 150 pages Makes me wonder if I actually got a full version of the book I got it as a free ebook so perhaps it was only a sample although the story seemed complete The font size is uite small so perhaps that's the explanation

Nightmare City is a uniue genre bending dystopian story that’s mostly steampunk sci fi fantasy Katya is the main character She’s a thief that lives in a balkanized city populated by humans that are fodder for monsters and demons Crime bosses have sectioned off the city into territories that are constantly fought over and controlled by zombies and other fantasy folk There’s much to like here especially the alchemy created by mixing fantasy horror and science fiction tropes This is part 1 of a two part story and it ends on a cliff hanger so buyer beware Still like it a lot

  6. Zachary K Zachary K says:

The dystopian world building was excellent as you could see the darkness and chaos in every scene The main character acted when she should not have and didn't act when any reasonable person would have and violated the see something say something adage too many times I found myself being frustrated with her but it was a uick action packed read maybe I'll read the second part

ActionJack Conner has created a very dark world although I liked the main character Kat The abrupt ending left me cold I'm not sure I want to buy the seuel to see what happens next

Interesting not uite steampunk An interesting take on steampunk Well written but has a few spelling errors that don't detract from the story A little disappointed that it's only half the story

  9. Heather Mills Heather Mills says:

Ends with a cliffhangerStory is uniue and characters are interesting However this book ends with a cliffhanger and I'm not a fan when there is no conclusion You need to know if the heroine is going to make it
