After two hundred thousand years you’d think that Death has seen everything there is to see But when he goes to collect the soul of Tommy Neilson he’s met with something he never expected to happen Tommy can see him Wellthat’s never happened before And maybe it was that fact or maybe his day and night job is just finally starting to get to him but Death can’t find it in himself to kill Tommy So he doesn’t And that is when things start to get complicatedNot only because Death finds himself going back to see Tommy And not only because Tommy can still see him But when Death finds himself falling for the human Death can’t make himself do what he is supposed to do Again Which is walk away Instead Death comes back over and over and it is starting to get harder and harder to leave because Death is falling in love and it seems Tommy is falling right backToo bad some things in life are inevitable–and it is not the taxman that they should be worried aboutThis is a very lighthearted uick read Death is a uirky hipster God or the Boss is a mumbling crazy person and Tommy Neilson is just your average joe Not a lot of time is spent in the dark and gritty of Death’s job but it was an interesting take on the whole Grimm Reapers mythology Reminded uite of bit of Dead Like Me to be honest Just you know with less waffles or dead end day jobsI have two issues with this book1 The first person narrative was a bit jarring at times Partly because he repeatedly broke the fourth wall addressing the readers all thru the story and it kept throwing off the rhythm of the story I don’t mind this is moderation but it kept happening and I was getting really tired of the dude talking to me and not living the story But also it didn’t help that the character felt really jittery–like 10 cups of coffee jittery Bouncing from emotion to emotion from place to place from thought to thoughtit was just too damn much I felt myself getting twitchy just reading this and I haven’t had a cup of coffee is like two days tea doesn’t count right??2 Death makes no sense Like as a character or as a person He is over two hundred thousand years old and yet he reads like a college freshman There is no depth to his character no weight to his voice and thoughts I simply have a hard time believing that this guy has been around for than a couple decades let alone a since the dawn of human time This is an issue I also have with a lot of vampire books if you are going to write a character with that much time attached to him you need to sell it I get that it is just supposed to be a light fluffy book but I have a giant pet peeve about this and it kept me from really enjoying the storyThen if I can just handwave his age issues away as fiction and get the hell over yourselfI’m still left uite puzzled by how Death acts We are told repeatedly that Death is two hundred thousand years old and yet we are asked to believe that he is completely up on modern pop culturebut that he also has no clue what a menu is or what pancakes are? I get that the guy doesn’t eat but people have died is resturants and someone in all the history of time must have suffered pancake related death at some point Or how is it possible that there is one Death and like seven billion or so humans on earth and yet there is plenty of time for Death to take the evening off? I get that he can schedule some deaths ahead of a time here but it was never made very clear why he had to be at some deaths and not othersI’m a very logic oriented person I am able to bend that logic to fit the world in which I am reading but when I find myself completely at a loss as to what the freaking rules of this world are I get confused and annoyed And I get that not all people are like this so they might very well enjoy this book It is low angst and fast paced so works as a nice light read I just couldn’t get over my issues with this book so to enjoy itJustpancakes? Really? How can Death not know about pancakes? A Joyfully Jay review 4 starsDeath Gets A Boyfriend was a light hearted tongue in cheek romance that was both a tad dark and funny Told in first person with Death narrating the schooling of Death was both intriguing and downright ridiculous at times Everything was a “first” for this character from failing to do his job to kissing a real live man Even before Death meets Tommy we are aware that he struggles with his job The “Boss” is presented as an eccentric lunatic who is somewhat like an idiot savant but whom later proves to have great compassion and tenderness even while asking Death to do the unthinkable Death has little option but to comply even when it may mean his happiness will be forfeit And what about that happiness? Death had led a solitary and closed off existence prior to meeting Tommy but once they meet Death embraces everything “human” he can find albeit somewhat reluctantly at first It is his naïveté that brings out the humor in this storyEven though we are continually reminded that Death is the harbinger of life ending the sweet awe filled moments he experiences such as his first kiss are just lovely to read Tommy seems to take the fact that he is now Death’s boyfriend in stride to the point where one must really suspend all kinds of disbelief—this is a fantasy piece of writing nothing less When approached in that way as if one was reading a fairy tale then the novella becomes a sweet tale of found love and magical momentsRead Sammy’s review in its entirety here

A book with the name Death Get a Boyfriend could go a lot of different ways A lot of horribly wrong ways It could go too dark too cliché too sappy too ‘fill in the blank’ Sophie Bonaste avoided all of those pitfalls She was able to craft a charming sweet and heartwarming tale while maintaining depth deep uestions and pain I appreciated that there weren’t attempts to answer those huge uestions and that she was willing to ask them I’m in love with the idea that Death has moral ualms about his job and grieves at times I also truly love the image of Death’s boss think about who that would be for a moment and his specific personality uirks And though I anticipated Bonaste finishing the story in one of three ways all of which I dreaded she threw me for a loop I didn’t see coming—one that I loved So greatly enjoy this author

Manic Monday ReviewI loved how this opened It grabbed my interest right away How the author portrayed Death in this book was genius He’s just a guy doing a job He dresses like us talks like us No skeleton in a black robe here lol It’s not even a job he enjoys truth be told Killing people makes him uncomfortable Maybe part of the reason he’s uncomfortable is because he doesn’t know why some people have to die God makes up the list and Death carries it out Okay yes how the author portrayed God cracked me upThen Death is supposed to claim one Thomas Tommy Neilson And oh boy this immortal’s world is turned upside down Death can’t take this man’s life Even when the time comes Death can’t do it He’s than a little freaked For the first time ever he fails to carry out his purpose But than that? Tommy can see Death Concerned disturbed and completely confused Death tries to carry on with his job while he waits for God to yell at him but it never happens Instead Death finds himself at the hospital where the man he was supposed to kill is recovering Unbelievably a friendship startssnicker I have to say I had a blast watching Death figure out he had feelings for Tommy The humor had me rolling in laughter even if you stop to think about this being about Death And that’s the kicker This is Death we’re talking we’re about Nothing is as clear cut as it seems and sometimes hard choices have to be madeI laughed and I cried What can a reader ask for lol I’d have no trouble recommending this book

This was adorableand so funny Curiosity got the better of me and I'm glad I picked up this little cutie read I'm not much into the supernatural AngelsDemons and even Ghost stories don't often turn out to be all that great fun for me but Death Gets a Boyfriend was simply endearing fun and entertaining as hell Sure I thought Death Tommy connected a bit too fast despite my insta love kink And I still wonder how he really managed to kill all those thousands of people every day despite the countless planned deaths his work hours still seemed very chill to me ; But hey that didn't stop me from enjoying his and Tommy's story Fiction is fiction after all and this was simply loveable Now I really want a Death for myself pout

Reviewed at The Blogger Girls35 starsDeath has been reaping souls for thousands of years It’s the only thing he’s ever known and while it might be lonely he’s never not been able to do his job That is until one of the names on his list is a soul he can’t seem to make himself take Immediately enad with Tommy Death’s intrigue means Tommy doesn’t die when he’s supposed to and soon Death’s fascination with the human turns into something he never thought he’d have – love But when the time comes Death has to make a decision – save the man he loves or save billions of soulsThis was such a sweet story I loved that it deals with Death also know as the Grim Reaper Except this Grim Reaper is far from the scary man with the scythe Instead he’s a funny geeky guy who just so happens to have the ability to end your suffering and take your soul He’s a uirky being with a love of novelty t shirts and maybe a little depressed at times Tommy though brightens Death’s life to the point that he finally has a reason to live I loved that Tommy and Death had such good chemistry and that Tommy didn’t really freak out when he learned that he’s the only one who could see DeathWhile I enjoyed this one I had a few issues with it Mostly I found Death’s tendency to go off topic a little distracting Sure he was funny and definitely amusing in the way he would go from one topic to another without any real connection between the two topics but after the first time or two it grew just a bit tiresome Beyond that I felt like the story was a little shallow not very deep or anythingIn the end this was a very entertaining read where Death is nothing like the Grim Reaper we all know and never want to meet Instead Death is kind funny and sweet and finally gets his own man If you’re looking for something cute sweet and with a few laughs definitely give this one a go

Death – yeah that’s his name – is supposed to kill Tommy but something stops him Instead of killing him as directed he stops and stares and is shocked when Tommy stares back No one can see Death If they could they’d know he looks nothing like they’ve depicted him This freaks Death out and he leaves Tommy in the hands of the paramedics and returns to killing Back on the jobHe can’t help himself and is compelled to go back to check on Tommy and he finds out that Tommy can still see him What a find He spends and time with Tommy and the two find they have a lot in common and end up being friends then loversOf course everyone has to die sometime and Death is in charge of that so you guessed it – dilemma time Death has to choose between giving Tommy a few years or saving maybe billions of livesLuckily there’s a little to it than that and we end up with a super HEA that is uite touchingThis is a uick funny read from a new at least to me author The secondary characters are as charming as the MCs and the premise is uniue and funI really enjoyed this book and look forward to from this authorI give it a 35 of 5 stars

★★★★ I thoroughly enjoyed it I would re read every now and thenFeel like a donut with all the trimmings? Do you crave something sweet and easy to swallow? then look no further Death Gets a Boyfriend is the fluffy sugar sweet read you've been cravingDeath is a nerdy hopeless God who wears Yoda t shirts and hipster jeans God is a crazed loon who mumbles and spits nonsense like a homeless guy wearing underpants over his pants Michael the right hand of god is a brown nose stuck up prick and Tommy is a guy who can see Death and gets caught up in all thisI enjoyed this for what it was a short fluffy romance read The exotica isn't over the top but still delivers some nice scenes The fantasy themes aren't too in depth or distracting Some scenes made my heart ache he IS a Death God after all while some scenes made me laughAll 'n all it was a nice addition to my gay romance collection and I would recommend this for a uick fix feel good read

I was lucky enough to win a copy of Death Gets A Boyfriend by Sophie Bonaste recently It was very moving for what sounded like a humorous novella I now understand why my answer to a uestion about my legacy is what won me the book The story revolves around the Grim Reaper finally getting a boyfriend after 200000 years alone Although immortals are not supposed to get involved with humans Death falls for what to him is a very special human Tommy Neilson The couple have to work through dealing with Death’s job dating when Death is only visible to Tommy and Tommy’s eventual death among other issues I did not see the ending to the story coming and it was very touching I’m always impressed by a writer who can combine humor with pathos as Bonaste did beautifully in this novella I look forward to her next adult title
