Helena At first she came off as a bore and somewhat prudish to me But as the story continues and you get to know her betteryou can tell she is just a young woman who has built walls around herself for fear of letting anyone get too close How she was able to hold back the information she did on Emily is beyond me cause it affected her future and possible romance with VernonVernon For a man of his age and status he is very dimwitted when it comes to Emily and her mother and downright rude towards Helena But when he does finally confess his feelings for her he is shocked to find himself stuck in the middle of a scandalOverall its a good story has a touch of adventure in it Only wish there was an epilogueTill next time Sweets Books

The Wayward Miss Wainwright surprised me in new and interesting ways despite having already devoured plenty of author Arabella Sheraton’s deliciously rompy Regency tales The story starts out like the butting heads attitude of Pride and Prejudice with the familiar ilk of a prideful but handsome Duke in this case of Rotherham who is determined to dislike our heroine Helena Wainwright because of her contrary ways Helena is a really strong a likeable heroine in her own right and it’s when she gets involved in the scandal and intrigue of the beautiful Emily Fanshawe that things take a totally original and fascinating twist You can really yourself as a reader stepping into Helena’s shoes in this intriguing tale and getting all the details of Emily and her past and then wondering which way to turn with the informationThe romance in this particular volume of Regency fun is slow burning and long to develop amid the intrigue but it’s all the rewarding for it and uite surprising in the ways it comes about eventually I really enjoyed this change of pace from Sheraton who has a real talent for taking her audience on a uniue journey each time despite the strict societal codes and realistic historical restrictions of the time period in which she writes There is as always a charm to the scandalous and sometimes petty life of the Regency society characters but in this novel I felt there was also a lot to appeal to the modern reader because of Helena’s progressive attitude which never goes too over the top progressive for her time either and the emotional journey that the characters go on For readers who want to dip a toe into authentic Regency but are perhaps a little unsure this might just be the best place to start

Helena Wainwright a no nonsense independent woman with a mind of her own has agreed to help her recently orphaned nephew and nieces adjust to life in the household of their new guardian their Uncle Vernon Duke of Rotherham Helena’s stay at Rotherham Park is only temporary until she’s sure that the children are settled and happy and she looks forward to the day when she can return home Sparks always seem to fly when Helena is in the duke’s company and not for the best of reasons She sees the handsome bachelor as arrogant and boorish and he in turn appears to be unnecessarily harsh in his dealings with her Such is their antipathy towards each other that they rarely see eye to eye In contrast the duke seems to be putty in the hands of Miss Emily Fanshawe who for some unfathomable reason is a house guest at Rotherham Park along with her truly obnoxious mother It should be as clear as day to the duke that these two people are not all that they seem which does make you uestion his intelligence especially when it transpires that he is considering making Miss Fanshawe his wife Five minutes in the company of his potential mother in law should have had him running for the hills Miss Fanshawe’s mother the villain of the piece is almost Dickensian in her awfulness and the plot descends into the murk and the mire of the criminal underworld thanks to her devious scheming This frothy romance is the kind of story where you want to knock the hero and heroine’s heads together to make them see sense because you know from the outset that they will inevitably end up together However the tale would be too straightforward and boring if the path to true love wasn’t littered with obstacles and pitfalls

I really try to open myself up to new author's and books and read with am open mind I can honestly say that I tried with this story I read it on Wattpad because I liked the description Once I started reading however I was uite bored There is no semblance of any kind of romance or understanding between Helena and Vernon until she sees him drunk in the hallway wearing only a robe In this moment he apparently decides that he has loved her since he laid eyes on her which readers would never know as he never showed AT ALL What follows is a kiss that I'm certain I will never want to read again as it is neither tender caring or romantic at all When he kisses her she realizes that she has always known that she loved him too Them we are forced to read about her immoral desires and daydreams which is where I simply gave up with the story to find something wholesome and altogether romantic and sweet
