I am a fan of Angela Thirkell's Barsetshire novels and was interested in finding out about the author The book did deliver a biography of Angela Thirkell and there was some interesting information about how some of Angela Thirkell's friends and acuaintances had informed some of her best loved characters like Lady Emily LeslieBut overall I found the book rather depressing It read like it had been hastily written and insufficiently edited For instance I found several mistakes about the content of the novels that made it seem as if the author had not even read Angela Thirkell's novels Most of the knowledge of Angela Thirkell's life comes from her voluminous correspondence like most people of that period she communicated with her friends and relatives by regular letter writing But either she kept her own private feelings to herself or the relevant correspondence has not survived Because there is nothing here that can explain how this spoiled society darling granddaughter of the celebrated symbolist painter Burne Jones ended up making not one but two impetuous marriages The first resulted in two sons and ended in divorce after a huge rape scandal The second was effectively terminated when Angela Thirkell took a ship back to England from Australia where she had moved with her second husband and never came back It seems that her relationship with her three sons was never really very good and became downright hostile or just alienated as the boys grew up Although the book moves faithfully through Angela Thirkell's life it never really answered the uestion of what she wanted what drove her what her ambitions were Just like Mrs Morland one of her characters Angela Thirkell seems to have written in order to survive financially and there is nothing wrong with that But her books are treated in such a short almost dismissive fashion that the reader is left with the impression that the biographer didn't actually care much for her subject or was not particularly interested in it
