I picked this up recently from the Nostalgia collection at Half Price Books, mostly because of the title I love both cats and coffee, so naturally this appealed to me.It is a children s book, but definitely not one that I would read to or share with a child today It s an odd little book, about a 70 something year old woman teaching a group of five year old what my sister would call life skills how to sweep, to clean, to plant flowers how to introduce yourself with pride and generally how t I picked this up recently from the Nostalgia collection at Half Price Books, mostly because of the title I love both cats and coffee, so naturally this appealed to me.It is a children s book, but definitely not one that I would read to or share with a child today It s an odd little book, about a 70 something year old woman teaching a group of five year old what my sister would call life skills how to sweep, to clean, to plant flowers how to introduce yourself with pride and generally how to be a lady or a gentleman Miss Effie also teaches the children eventually how to drink their coffee black. However, the reason I won t read this book to my six year old niece is because she also teaches the children how to put down a cat Now, I understand that this was written in a different time and that lessons of life and death are important and necessary, but the method used here is not one we d hopefully use today and I think would be upsetting to most children.Professional Book Nerds Reading Challenge Children s book you ve never read 3 12 PBNRead2019

This is a story about an older woman who takes in children and teaches them how to act like gentlemen and basic skills like dusting, sweeping, and how to enter a room She is very stern and never shows emotions, but she is respected by the kids and they enjoy her One day her cat shows up to the house in bad shape, and the woman Effie tells the children to come watch as she puts the cat to sleep Later, during their lessons she goes to checks to see if the cat has died yet, and when she seems This is a story about an older woman who takes in children and teaches them how to act like gentlemen and basic skills like dusting, sweeping, and how to enter a room She is very stern and never shows emotions, but she is respected by the kids and they enjoy her One day her cat shows up to the house in bad shape, and the woman Effie tells the children to come watch as she puts the cat to sleep Later, during their lessons she goes to checks to see if the cat has died yet, and when she seems at a loss for words She tells the kids that they will be finishing the day early and to go home You can sense her sadness even though nothing is said about it.I thought this was a touching book, after seeing the woman have no emotion for the entire book, the ending is effective when you see her sadness Good story

Classic story a great read started reading it to my 5 year old without knowledge of the endingI left out some of the details of the putting to sleep part but he could related with the concept given that we have relatively recently had to put our cat to sleep.

It s such an interesting and awesome book I loved it because of the actual meaning and how it represented kids being treated as adults Miss Effie is totally crazy but has very proper fancy manners She represents a good model idol

Every single person ought to spend a formative summer with Miss Effi Barr Coffee should only be drunk black, you should be able to tell a stranger a false name as easily as you should your true one, and parents don t need to know everything I can t believe I gave this book away.
