Brilliant to read some of Darwin's original arguments for evolution through natural selection when it was yet to be widely accepted Covered interesting things like rebuttals to other scientists arguments the inadeuacy of the fossil record how identical species might exist separated by vast distances when fossils are actually laid down how long it takes for land to actually erode and trying to get to grips with just how massive spans of time really areThat said it's not easy going but this metaphor will stick with meI look at the natural geolological record as a history of the world imperfectly kept and written in a changing dialect; of this history we possess the last volume alone relating only to two or three countries Of this volume only here and there a short chapter has been preserved; and of each page only here and there a few lines Each word of the slowly changing language in which the history is supposed to be written being or less different in the interrupted succession of chapters may represent the apparently abruptly changed forms of life entombed in our constructive but widely separated formations

I struggled hard with this exceptional piece of scientific research While the matter of this book's topic should be rated a 5 I give it a 2 for my overall experience with reading the book Dated 1859 of first publication I struggled with understanding paragraph to paragraph The way in which Darwin wrote Hosts of Living Forms has since been lost and lost is the reader that attempts to read I stuck with it though Even when I would put it down for weeks on end I would always come back I had to finish it Now to understand itthat's a different beast

I gave this a three because a it's dense science writing b it's dense science writing from the nineteen hundreds so the syntax is a bit weird to the modern reader BUT it's probably a 5 star because a it is some ground breaking scientific stuff which is rather interesting and b it does get easier to read the drunker you get
