The Victorian Tailor Techniues and Patterns for Making Historically Accurate Period Clothes for Gentlemen by Jason Maclochlainn is an excellent reference manual Not only does the book include the usual patterns and fashion plates found in many period tailors' manuals it also gives extremely detailed instructions as well as detailed illustrated explanations of tailors' workshops practices and tools information on fabrics and sources of suppliesAs with all tailors' manuals patterns are included but you will have to draft your own based on them and fit and adjust them yourselfWhile I have not yet found a historical tailoring manual suitable for absolute beginners this book comes closest It contains a remarkable amount of clear information and helpful instruction

There are two versions of this book one has patterns and the other the one I bought doesn'tThis is a guide and historical story about the types of clothes that people wore in the 19th century because so many things no longer exists like 'banyans' and the crazy cravat knots I doubt that people need so many different clothes and changes but it maybe because this was pre TV and pre Internet and rich people really didn't have anything better to do with themselvesFun pictures and stories3 stars

Maclochlainn writes in clear prose which makes the instructions seem easy to follow I haven't made any of the patterns yet but am interested in delving into the world of tailoring This book seems like a good place to startThings that stood out for me beginners exercises in the appendices and modern sources for period accurate fabrics which are necessary to get period looks

Historically interesting and information packed it'll give you a real sense of just how much expertise a Victorian tailor must have had in order to make mens' garments It also makes you aware of how hot and itchy and sweaty most Victorians must have been Still to get the most out of the book you probably need to know a good bit about sewing in the first place otherwise much of it is kind of gibberish

I will be finding the time to put this into practice it's not like I need an excuse
